7/25 — Arriving in Green River
What3Words: ///undertaken.fixture.doodle
We got packed up with no issues. It took a little longer than usual because I was still not feeling great. On the drive over, Herb started getting a migraine and wasn’t feeling well either. He has been laying down since he got back from dinner, so hopefully some rest will help him feel better.
It is 10 o’clock at night, and I have already unpacked us and gotten us pretty well set up. I took a shower, and the shower here was one of the best I’ve had at a campsite in weeks and weeks. I am tired and ready for bed.
I am looking forward to calling the family tomorrow and getting some other things taken care of around camp.
I think I accidentally turned the water off when I realized we had a drip and tried to hand-tighten the connection on the hose. Tomorrow I need to check and make sure the water is turned back on and maybe put some plumber’s tape on the connection so we can get a tighter fit.
The Starlink is set up, although it isn’t in the best place, so I will need to figure that out. It works really well regardless.
I also need to get us set up so we can start preparing our own meals again and get some groceries picked up or delivered.
We need to get laundry done by Monday at the latest. I also want to figure out how to clean the floors without using the back ramp. We’re in a smaller back-in space, and to create enough room I emptied the trailer while we were still connected to the van and then had Herb back the trailer up. Now there isn’t enough room to open the back ramp, which is how I normally hose out the floor.
I have a mop and a broom, but they both need a good cleaning. The last two places we stayed had terrible water pressure, and there were massive droughts, so I didn’t want to use more water than necessary.
I am glad to be here, and I’m hoping for cooler weather—even if it isn’t that much cooler.
7/26 — Still Not Feeling Great
99° / 68°
Today was a very, very hot day, and it got very hot in the trailer. As a result, we didn’t get a lot done. Herb and I are also still not feeling well.
We have very different symptoms, which made things even more curious, so I started looking things up today. It sounds like we may both have some kind of GI infection, like food poisoning or something similar. I have the typical symptoms, but Herb is having what seems like a pseudo-relapse, which is creating a completely different set of symptoms.
He is frustrated and not doing well, but he will recover and get better.
Meanwhile, we didn’t get a lot of physical things accomplished today, but we did make an important decision: we’re going to stay here for a full two months.
Herb also started putting together travel plans for when we leave, so we actually accomplished quite a bit today without having to physically move around.
7/27 — Let the Healing Begin
92° / 63°
Today things were much cooler inside the trailer.
Herb and I did a deep dive into our symptoms yesterday, and I have Herb on the BRAT diet for the most part. I didn’t eat all day today, so after a Walmart shopping trip I made dinner for myself. It was delicious.
I’m feeling slightly nauseous since dinner, but I know that if I distract myself, it will probably go away.
I didn’t set up the Gekko or fix the water, but I rearranged the trailer and got it set up so we could cook again and wash some cooking utensils. Then I actually made dinner.
I got a lot done today, and I’m ready to go to sleep.
I am ready to face tomorrow.
7/28 — Poe Had a Really Bad Day
90° / 63°
Today had its ups and downs.
Poe has not been herself today, and as the day went on, she seemed to get weaker and weaker. Herb will take her to the vet tomorrow if there is no improvement.
This took up a lot of our attention and energy today because Poe is a member of our family, and when she isn’t well, it’s a big deal.
The day actually started well. Herb made a delicious breakfast and tea, and my first client didn’t show up, which gave me an opportunity to have breakfast and start the day slowly.
Then I worked for a few hours, and when I finished, the trailer was very hot. We lay around for a while, and once it started cooling down, we were able to cover Herb’s tip-out with the Gekko.
Then we went to the office to pick up some packages. By the time we got back, it was starting to get much cooler.
I made dinner for Poe and Herb. I thought maybe giving Poe something different to eat would entice her, but today she wouldn’t even eat or take a treat.
After dinner, I tried to fix the main hose because it is dripping water. I made the situation slightly better, but it is definitely not fixed. I’ll try again tomorrow and maybe use a little more plumber’s tape or try using the pliers to get a better connection.
We are not hooked up to a sewer here, so we aren’t using the gray water tank. This will give us an opportunity to see how efficient our system is and whether we can improve it.
I feel very settled here, especially knowing we’re going to be here for two months. I’m excited to go through our totes and improve our setup.
The kitchen setup I came up with yesterday actually seems like it could be the solution. Herb even sat and used it as a desk today to work and look out the window.
7/29 — Cool Weather
76° / 56°
Today was a beautiful, cool day with light rain in the afternoon.
We woke up and checked on Poe. At first, I thought she had passed away because she was so completely listless.
Herb took her to the vet, and they kept her overnight. She is critical, but she could still turn a corner.
I cleaned up the trailer a bit and cleaned Poe’s bowls and litter box so that, if she comes home, she will come back to things nice and clean.
Herb and I took a walk, visited with Poe, and grabbed some groceries.
7/30 — Beautiful Weather
91° / 59°
Today we woke up early, and it was cold. The high was 91°, but it definitely felt pretty cold all day.
There were supposed to be thunderstorms, but we only got a little drizzle during the day.
Poe is still critical and remains at the vet. Herb went to visit her a couple of times today.
They’re going to move her to injectable insulin, which I am very grateful for. I’ll just have to learn how to give her the injection, and of course, her insulin will need to stay cold in the refrigerator.
I walked around the RV park a little today. It is so crazy to wake up and see so many RVs, then an hour or so later have them all disappear, and then see another bunch arrive in the early afternoon.
Where we are, there is a lot of overnight traffic. It is really interesting watching all the different RVs come and go.
Herb actually got a lot of things done today. Although he says he’s not feeling 100%, he did so much today—more than he’s been able to do in a long time. I feel like his body, other than the pseudo-relapse, is starting to heal.
7/31 — Sad Day Today
96° / 60°
Poe has taken a turn for the worse.
I woke up early today and saw my first two clients, and then we spent a few hours at the vet’s office visiting with Poe.
She is very, very sick, and it was terribly sad to see her like that.
Herb and I left the vet and ran some errands, then went back to visit with her again.
We came home and didn’t even have dinner.
If she makes it through tonight, we will have some very difficult decisions to make tomorrow.
8/1 — Grief
100° / 61°
Today we woke up to a call from the vet telling us it was time for Poe to go.
We asked if we could come over straight away, and the vet told us Poe might not make it in time, but that we were welcome to come.
We got there as fast as we could, and I was able to hold her while she passed.
There was so little left of her. She had lost so much weight and was barely moving. All week I had thought this could happen, but the reality of it hit me in that moment.
And then she was gone.
When we got home, we received a notification that her litter and food had been delivered.
Her leash was on my bed. Her things were everywhere.
I spent the whole day either distracting myself or crying.
I was able to eat, but I felt nauseous.
This was so, so very hard.
It’s hard to imagine waking up tomorrow without her.
8/2 — Grieving and Trying to Stay Cool
102° / 61°
Today was really hot, and it was hard to get motivated.
I woke up missing Poe and shed a lot of tears today. But I got to talk to my mom and my brother, and those conversations were really nice.
I am grateful for work tomorrow and hope it will be a good distraction.
Today it got really hot, so we set up the floor AC unit again. After a few hours, Herb wanted to go out and find a cool place and maybe get ice cream or something like that.
We found a waffle and crêpe place. The food looked delicious, but they didn’t have AC.
Herb enjoyed his waffle.
We used the time to meal-plan for the upcoming week, and I’ll go get the groceries with Herb tomorrow after my workday.
8/3 — Today, Distractions Worked Quite Well
92° / 50°
Today we woke up and I had to get ready for work.
It was so hard and sad, but the distraction of work really helped—until my last client.
My last client had to put a kitten down that morning and was talking about it through the session. I got out of the last session and bawled my eyes out.
I got myself together and called Herb, and immediately started crying again.
He suggested that we get some of Poe’s things together and donate them to the vet.
We got rid of her traveling litter box and her regular litter box, all of her litter—which was over five bags—cat food, and some other things.
We still have to go through and gather the rest of her things, including her treats and catio, but at least the things we had to look at every single day are now out of view.
We also got a chance to meal-plan yesterday, so today we picked up groceries.
When we got back, I reorganized our little kitchen area, which very quickly gets disorganized—especially with Herb using it in the morning and me using it at night, and both of us wanting to organize it differently.
Neither of us was feeling that great. It felt like we were still having some GI issues, but I think some of it may actually be grief.
We decided to change our dinner plan to something a little milder.
8/4 — All Things Lined Up Today
89° / 53°
Today we managed to get a lot of things done. Everything seemed to line up for us.
We woke up to a nice, cool morning, and even the high temperature was only 89°.
I had clients early in the morning and again in the afternoon, with a gap in the middle. I was able to get the floors nice and clean and bleached. I reorganized the front part of the van and moved things around to accommodate us better.
I also started a place to put Poe’s things that we’re going to donate as we encounter them.
I was able to repurpose some of the things we already had to help us get organized.
We also ran to Dollar General, and I was able to look around and see what kinds of groceries they carry because there is a Dollar General much closer to us than Walmart.
Overall, it was a good day.
There were still lots of conversations about Poe and lots of tears, but it helped to focus on other things and stay busy.
8/5 — Uneventful
92° / 54°
Not much to report today.
It was a little easier.
Herb was able to comfortably find a place to work in the trailer. I ordered a new mattress for me, and we’re waiting for the new pantry organizers to arrive.
8/6 — I Am So Tired
96° / 57°
After not sleeping for the last two nights, today it finally caught up with me.
I finished my work and lay down to do my progress notes. As soon as they were completed, I must have fallen asleep.
Herb woke me up a few hours later, and he had made dinner.
That was so nice.
I didn’t get all the things done yesterday that I wanted to, but I will have plenty of opportunity tomorrow.
8/7 — Restful Day
99° / 61°
It was very hot today, and we had a pretty lazy day with not much to report.
I did get my new mattress, but it is still expanding and needs another 48 to 72 hours.
8/8 — Starting to Get Organized
96° / 60°
It was a hot day, so we watched movies.
When it started to cool down, we went through Poe’s tote, the recreation stuff, and a tote we had with mostly Herb’s things for caring for his legs when we first started on the road.
I am still crying randomly and missing Poe.
We got to talk to Caleb.
It was a nice day.
8/9 — Cool and Breezy Day
92° / 60°
Today was a day when we caught up on rest and took things easy.
Herb actually went grocery shopping this morning and made breakfast when he got home.
We watched movies, talked to family members, made plans for the upcoming week, and meal-planned.
We’re going grocery shopping when I finish work tomorrow.
The morning weather said it was going to be 92°, but it didn’t feel hot at all today. There was a threat of lightning nearby and lots of wind.
We also booked our winter stay and decided we will stay there for six months to save some money.
We looked at flights for Caleb to come stay with us, and we started looking for things to do while he is with us—or just while we’re there.
8/10 — A New Day and New Stuff
91° / 62°
Today we got a lot of things done.
Herb got up early and brought breakfast back. I had a full workday, and then we ran over to Walmart and went grocery shopping.
Our new pantry setup was delivered today, and my mattress was finally ready to be put on the bed.
It was so nice to set up the new mattress and put brand-new sheets on it.
I threw the old mattress into the back of the van for now. We’ll have to figure out what to do with it.
I assembled the new pantry, but I haven’t had a chance to move everything over yet.
I’m still gathering Poe’s things so we can donate them to the vet. I already have a few bags of her things in the van, but I still have more food and treats, harnesses and leashes, and grooming products to add to the collection.
I’ve gone all day today without crying, and I am looking forward to a good night’s sleep on the new mattress.
Tomorrow and for the rest of the week, I’d like to get the pantry set up, finish the outside totes, and remove some of the totes we have inside so we can reorganize and reuse them in other ways.
I have more things arriving in the mail to help us get organized.
I am hoping that by the end of the week, our kitchen will be pretty much locked in and completed.
8/11 — Rained Out
88° / 63°
Since I had a hole in the middle of my day today, we had planned some pretty lofty goals.
However, things got canceled because of the weather.
The laundry got done, the pantry got set up, and the old pantry was removed.
The screen on the door was set up, and I made a fix for the door release that may just be temporary.
We didn’t get around to doing the totes because the time we had scheduled for that, it looked like it was going to rain.
About eight drops fell.
And that was it.
We have some time tomorrow to try again.
The goal is to get all of them done by the end of this week, so fingers crossed.
I currently have a large pile of miscellaneous stuff in the middle of the trailer that was pulled out of the pantry drawers.
It definitely isn’t food.
There are pliers, wrenches, lights, table legs, and things that I really have no idea where I’m supposed to put—or where I would look for them when I needed them.
We also have a lot of things arriving tomorrow that will help with organization, and we have a lot of things that need to be thrown out that are large, so we’ll need to find appropriate places to dispose of them.
I really want to get as much done as quickly as possible because, while we’re here, it would be nice to get everything accomplished and then go to the Tetons or Yellowstone knowing that we accomplished our goals for this space.
8/12 — Getting It Done
81° / 58°
Today was pretty productive too.
We went through and organized the kitchen tote and found things we want to bring inside and things we want to leave outside.
I want to clean everything before it comes inside, go through it, reduce it, and then find places for the things we keep.
We were also able to tackle the mountain of things on the table and figure out where everything was going. We got everything sorted into piles.
Then our under-sink storage arrived, and we were able to set it up and get all our cleaning supplies put away nicely.
We found a place to throw away the old mattress and were able to get rid of it.
Tomorrow we’ll have to throw out the old pantry drawers and bins, finish getting the kitchen organized, and make room for the things outside to come inside.
8/13 — Cold and Rainy Day
78° / 56°
Today was a wonderful, wonderful day.
It was cold most of the day, and by the time I finished with work, I was ready to get under the covers and listen to the rain falling outside.
Herb and I watched a movie or two, and then we had mashed potatoes, corn, and steak for dinner.
It was lovely making the potatoes and heating the trailer up to a comfortable temperature for once, instead of it being so hot outside that you don’t want to cook anything.
Things are starting to pull together inside the trailer and look pretty good.
We still have a long way to go, but we’ll have time tomorrow to go through one or two totes and finish some of the work in the kitchen and trailer.
8/14 — Beautiful Day
75° / 56°
Today was a beautiful, cool day, with a couple of rain showers on and off.
We got to the end of the totes, and now we need to start on the van over the weekend and get that in order.
The kitchen is much more usable right now.
Even though today was a very lazy day for both of us, we still got a lot done.
Herb is preparing for a job interview on Monday, which he is really excited about.
8/15 — Lazy Weekend Day
81° / 54°
We had a lazy day while Herb studied and prepared for his job interview on Monday.
We’ll take care of the van organization tomorrow and see how much we can get accomplished.
Caleb drives up to school tomorrow, and I’m looking forward to calling him once he gets in.
I also want to try to talk to Mom, Sher, and Aliyah.
Today there was some rain on and off and it was a nice, cool day here.
I’m looking forward to getting things done tomorrow.
8/16 — Family Day
86° / 55°
Today was a perfect Sunday.
I got to text with my niece. I got to talk to my mom. I got to talk to my son more than once. I got to sleep in, and I got to go shopping.
We didn’t really get a lot done outside with the van today, but we did go shopping.
We meal-planned for the week. We spoke to family, and we got to enjoy each other’s company.
The best part of my day was my son telling me that wherever his dad and I are is where his home is.
8/17 — Good Work Day
89° / 59°
My day went well.
Herb’s interview did not happen because they couldn’t connect, so he is working on getting it rescheduled.
8/18 — Thunderstormy
85° / 55°
Today was an easy day.
There was a great thunder and lightning storm and rain, but it passed pretty quickly.
8/19 — Healing Day
92° / 57°
I’ve not been feeling great over the last few days.
Today I started to feel a little bit better, but it was still a day of seeing clients and getting lots of rest.
8/20 — Hot, Hot, Hot
94° / 60°
Today I was really not feeling great.
I had a pretty full workday, but after work I fell asleep for a couple of hours.
I think Herb said he wasn’t feeling great either, but I made dinner and we both ate.
Thank goodness tomorrow is Friday.
Hopefully Herb and I can talk tomorrow or over the weekend about getting over to the Grand Tetons and/or Yellowstone, along with some other future planning.
Today was a bit hotter, and Herb went out early in the morning to do the laundry. When he came home, I went out to the van to grab coffee and toast from him.
I left the trailer door open, and when I got back, I left it open for him.
I think during that time the AC might have frozen up because a couple of hours later it was ridiculously hot in here.
I had clients and wasn’t able to stop to troubleshoot it, but Herb came in and was able to plug in the floor AC and do some other things and got us cooled off pretty quickly.
8/21 — Another Hot Day
95° / 62°
Another very good day, but also very hot.
We had a really late dinner after everything cooled off.
I’m looking forward to having a good weekend and getting some stuff done.
8/22 — Lazy Weekend Day
85° / 58°
Today I got to have a nice, long sleep-in.
Then we booked our next two stays and paid for them.
So now we are locked in from now until almost mid-April.
We also made some purchases to help with getting organized and had some discussions about how to best keep the trailer cool on hot days.
One of the purchases we made today was an electric wheelchair for Herb so we can participate in more things as we travel around.
8/23 — Sundays Are for Doing Nothing
84° / 58°
Today was another great day for sleeping in.
I woke up, took a shower, and did the meds for the week. Then I got to talk to Caleb and my mom.
It was nice to check in with everyone and see how they were doing.
Herb made a snack, and then I made dinner.
Nice, easy day.
We meal-planned and got the groceries ready for tomorrow. Herb will just need to go pick them up.
I have a prescription to pick up tomorrow, and I also have seven clients scheduled.
We’re going to have breakfast at McDonald’s, and my first client isn’t until 9 AM.
I feel like we’re pretty nicely set up for tomorrow.
We also had some pretty strong wind gusts this afternoon and rain on and off most of the day, so it stayed nice and cool.
As I’m writing this, I can hear thunder starting.
8/24 — Busy Monday
85° / 57°
Today was actually pretty cool and even cold for part of the day.
The trailer stayed around 68° at its warmest.
I had my seven clients, and Herb picked up a prescription for me and grabbed the groceries.
When I finished work, I put up the groceries.
We had a yummy dinner of sautéed vegetables and chicken.
We got to watch some TV together and planned out tomorrow.
8/25 — Today Was a Little Bit of a Wildcard
87° / 57°
I did not sleep well last night at all, so waking up for an 8 AM client was challenging.
It was even more frustrating because they didn’t show up.
Then I wanted to start preparing lunch, and I was so cold that I ended up bundling myself up with blankets and falling asleep.
I woke up for my next client, and after that client I was able to get lunches made for the next few days.
We had steak and eggs for dinner, which was not the plan, but I switched the meals around because the ingredients I needed for tonight’s dinner weren’t ripe yet.
Meanwhile, Herb did the laundry today, so I have nice, clean sheets.
We’re trying to get his medication sorted out, and there has been a bit of a snafu, so it’s probably going to be a couple of days later than it’s supposed to be.
His electric wheelchair is arriving tomorrow, so we’ll be able to do more things together.
He seems excited about it.
8/26 — Another Day
88° / 57°
Today we got rid of the rest of Poe’s belongings at the vet’s office.
I had a pretty full workday.
We had a good dinner together.
Not really a lot to say other than a late-night run for ice cream.
8/27 — Easy Day
89° / 61°
Today was a pretty full workday.
Herb’s electric wheelchair arrived, so he was able to play with his new toy.
It was a pretty uneventful day.
We did have some packages arrive, but we’ll probably get a chance to start using them over the next couple of days.
9/8 — Loving Being Here
We had a really good weekend this weekend.
We got some good rest, but we also organized the pantry area and the kitchen. We went through a bunch of things and threw some things out. We organized our hoses and electrical stuff and put some items in the van that we’ll go through and organize at a later date.
We also went into the next town for brunch one day and saw a really neat building.
When we looked up what the building was, it turned out to be the local community college.
The local community college is home to 25 dinosaur fossils that were found right here in Wyoming. They include a triceratops and a Tyrannosaurus rex.
How cool would it be to go to college there and have lunch with one of those guys?
We also went to the local Green River Museum, which, although small, packed in a lot of information about the roots of this area.
It talked about the fossils and petrified vegetation found locally, and the history of this mining town was fascinating.
We were especially interested in all the different ethnicities that went into founding and growing this location, all the way back in the 1800s.
I can’t believe how much we have enjoyed being here and how beautiful it is.
Often at night when I go outside, I am blown away by the night sky.
And when I drive into town, even just to get groceries, I am often amazed at how beautiful the mountains are around us.
There are these really long trains that I keep trying to photograph, but the pictures don’t seem to capture how cool they look as they wind through the mountains.
They remind me of my fascination as a kid with looking at miniature villages and watching trains travel through them.
We will be leaving here in about a week and a half.
It’s funny how some locations make me feel cursed because bad things happen while we’re there.
But this location doesn’t feel cursed.
Even though we arrived and Poe immediately got sick and passed away within the week, somehow this area still doesn’t feel like a bad place.
Even though, during our first weekday here, Herb went to do the laundry and ended up damaging our van door, it still doesn’t feel like this place is bad.
In other places where we’ve stayed for even shorter periods of time, I couldn’t wait to get out of there and move on.
Here, I don’t feel that way at all.
We have gotten a lot of things done while we’ve been here, and we’ve also had some really lazy times and gotten some much-needed rest.
We have two more stops before we get to where we’re planning to stay for the winter.
I’m looking forward to getting more things done during those stops, including reorganizing the van.
For now, I know I can leave here content with what we’ve accomplished.
My work has also picked up, so I have much busier weekdays.
At least that keeps me out of trouble during the week!
I start at 8 AM and I’m usually done by 3 or 4 in the afternoon, so I cannot complain.
One of the things we’ve enjoyed the most about being here is watching all the people come through.
We’ve enjoyed looking at people’s different camping setups—their trailers, vans, campers, and all the creative ways people travel.
So many people come through here just for the night and leave the next morning.
It’s funny to see this place full at night and then, by lunchtime the next day, have it be almost empty.
We have really enjoyed our time here.
9/19 — Move Day
I was really anxious about moving today.
There was a lot of inside stuff to do, which I’m not used to, but there was less heavy lifting and outside work than usual.
Check-out time was 11 AM, and at 10:59 AM, we were rolling out of Green River RV Park and on our way to Rollin’ Home RV Park in Nephi, Utah.
It is sad leaving here because we have really enjoyed it.
It is very beautiful here.
But we are also leaving for the first time without Poe.
Travel will be much easier without having to worry about her, but it will also be much, much sadder.
We will be at our next stop for two weeks, then Littlefield, Arizona, for two weeks, and then Bouse, Arizona, for six months.
We would love to hear about places to see around the Bouse area.
So far, we’re thinking about Joshua Tree, Montezuma’s Castle, and Bryce Canyon.
We’ll also have Caleb with us for his winter break, and we would love to take him sightseeing.
After everything that happened here, Green River somehow became a place we loved.
We came here sick, lost Poe, dealt with some difficult days, reorganized our entire home, rested, worked, planned, and slowly started figuring out what life looks like without her.
And somehow, despite all of that, I am leaving here feeling content.
Goodbye, Green River.
You were good to us.
