The drive here was gorgeous. I wasn’t able to take any photos because Poe kept me occupied the entire drive, so I had my hands full. Even so, it was a truly breathtaking trip.

Once we arrived, we were immediately excited to be here. The staff are wonderful and had already helped us with one of Herb’s emergencies before we had even finished setting up.

Setting up was a little difficult because of the heat, but we worked quickly. Thankfully, our campsite is shaded, so the trailer cooled down very fast.

I think we’re really going to enjoy being here. There seems to be so much to see and explore in the area.

July 12

Today Was Hot, and We Got Through It

Today was another very hot day as the heat wave continued across the country. The “feels like” temperature reached 106°, but overnight it became pleasantly cool—actually cold—which made for a wonderful night’s sleep.

Tomorrow will be my first workday in what feels like forever, even though it’s really only been two days.

I got to talk with my mom today, which was really nice.

Herb spent the day driving around and exploring the area. He seems genuinely excited about everything around us.

July 13

Preparing to cook again – soon…

Today was a really good day.

Work went well. Herb got up early and brought breakfast home, and afterward we installed the Gekko cover over his tip-out. He then went to do the laundry and took a shower.

After work, we went out for dinner.

It was so nice to have such a hot day and still be able to keep the trailer cool. We didn’t even need to run the portable air conditioner that we recently purchased.

Looking back, I think the trailer got so hot a few days ago because we didn’t turn the air conditioner on early enough, and Herb’s tip-out wasn’t covered. Using either the reflective tarp or the reflective side of the Gekko cover makes a huge difference in the trailer’s temperature.

Today I cleaned out the refrigerator, and I’m hoping we’ll finally be able to start cooking again while we’re here. I really miss preparing our own meals instead of constantly eating fast food or restaurant food.

I’ve already planned this week’s meals. We just need a couple more things in place before we can start cooking. My only concern is heating up the trailer too much. If that becomes a problem, we can always cook outside using the grill or propane oven instead.

We’ve also been talking about buying an induction cooktop since they produce much less heat than a propane stove. It may be worth looking into.

July 14

Clean floors solution

Today was another good day.

We got an early start, and I was able to have brunch with Herb before enjoying a relaxing afternoon.

Herb is still working on our gray water system so we can start cooking again. Hopefully, we’ll have everything finished tomorrow.

I bought a new mop, and it works really well on our floors. I’m looking forward to giving the trailer a thorough mopping tomorrow.

Both Herb and I got to talk with Caleb today, which was really nice.

I’m really looking forward to meal planning, grocery shopping, and getting back to cooking our own meals.

July 15

Grey Water Victory

Today was another good day.

It started early again, and I had a break in the middle of the day that gave me enough time to take a shower.

After I finished work, Herb and I went out for an early dinner and brought dessert home to enjoy while we watched TV.

The biggest accomplishment today was that Herb finished the gray water system. That means we can finally start preparing our own meals again, and I’m really excited about it.

I’m looking forward to the weekend. Just a couple more days to go.

July 16

Working in the mountains

Today was a busier workday for me, so I did not get to go out.

At this point, we have our gray water situation taken care of, and the refrigerator has been cleaned out. I just need to organize my kitchen tomorrow, and then I can finally get back to cooking!

I also wanted to make sure I wasn’t neglecting Herb, so I’m planning a date for the weekend.

I do not like being away from the trailer—or Poe—for too long. This Saturday will have to be an exception because what I have planned will keep us away for at least six hours.

We have set up a camera inside the trailer so we can monitor Poe and the temperature. While we can’t change the temperature remotely unless we’re using the portable floor air conditioner, we’ve been here long enough that I have a good feel for how the trailer handles the heat. I think we can set it and forget it.

Being able to monitor everything gives us peace of mind. If I were less confident about the weather or how the trailer handled the temperatures here, I would probably set up the portable air conditioner so I could make adjustments remotely, especially since we’ll be at least thirty minutes away.

July 17

Not Feeling My Best Today

I had a good day at work and finished early.

I had a long list of things I wanted to accomplish, but my stomach was bothering me, and I was feeling nauseous. I didn’t get much done and ended up falling asleep earlier than I intended without zipping myself into my tip-out.

I woke up a couple of times during the night because of Poe, and then early Saturday morning I woke to discover a wet bed and a cat still happily cuddling me, completely confused by my reaction.

July 18

Not Such an Easy Day

The goal today was to sleep in.

Herb woke me once to let me know he was leaving and then woke me again when he returned. What really got me awake, though, was realizing that Poe had urinated on the bed while we were lying there cuddling.

I hoped it was at least 10:00 a.m., but it was only a few minutes after 7:00.

I stripped the bed, carried everything over to the laundry room where Herb had just started a load, then came back to clean the mattress. Thankfully, it has a waterproof protector. Afterward, I simply laid a towel down and went back to bed because I still wasn’t feeling well.

Normally, I sleep inside the zippered enclosure over my bed so Poe can’t get onto it. I had simply fallen asleep watching TV the night before and forgotten to zip it closed.

After a few hours of resting, Herb started getting restless, so we went for a drive to another nearby town he had discovered. We stopped for a snack and had a lovely afternoon before heading home.

Once we got back, I needed more rest.

Herb was excited about driving up into the mountains that evening to photograph the Milky Way. He seemed a little anxious about going, which is unusual for him. The location was about an hour and a half away, over 11,000 feet in elevation, and involved driving unfamiliar mountain roads in complete darkness.

I had no desire to go. I don’t like mountain roads, steep drop-offs, darkness, or heights individually—let alone all at once.

As Herb was getting ready to leave, he started talking with our neighbors, who decided to join him. Having company gave him a little extra confidence, and off they went.

I was nervous for him but also enjoyed having a little time to myself. While he was gone, I drifted in and out of sleep, checking my phone each time I woke up. He texted me throughout the drive until he lost cell service. I worried about him driving on those mountain roads.

A little after midnight, I finally heard from him again. He was safely on his way home.

It was interesting hearing what had made him nervous. I was worried about the mountain roads and the drive itself, while he was more concerned about being robbed or not being able to protect himself or his camera equipment because of his disability.

Despite everything, he came home with two beautiful photographs of the Milky Way. He never even changed to the lens he had specifically brought because he felt uncomfortable exposing his expensive camera gear while surrounded by strangers.

July 19

Another Day Recuperating

Today was a nice day to catch up on phone calls, watch some TV, and take lots of naps.

I’m finally starting to feel better, which I’m grateful for.

It was nice talking with people we met at previous campsites as well as catching up with family.

I gave Herb several phone calls to make tomorrow regarding possible places for us to stay later this summer, next winter, and beyond.

We’re hoping to attend the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta in October, so we’re beginning to think farther ahead about where we’ll stay and how long it will take us to travel between locations.

One of the friends we’ve met on the road also shared some great suggestions about places to spend the winter and other destinations we should eventually visit.

July 20

Threats of thunderstorms

Today brought more threats of thunderstorms, although none actually arrived. I could see storms all around us on the radar, but they never reached our campground.

I had a good day at work and enjoyed dinner with Herb.

I had just fallen asleep when Herb woke me because he was throwing up.

Yesterday Poe wasn’t feeling well. Today it was Herb’s turn.

Tomorrow is our big outing to the movies, so I’m hoping he feels much better.

We’re moving to Wyoming this Saturday, and it looks like we’ll be spending the rest of the summer there.

I’m excited about staying in one place for a month or more so we can finally go through all of our belongings, reorganize everything, and continue lightening our load.

Fun Day

Today was a fun day, although it came with more than its fair share of challenges.

The day started like most mornings. Herb went out to get breakfast while I took care of Poe and got ready for work.

The first problem was that the app I use to order breakfast wasn’t working. I couldn’t load money into the app, so I couldn’t place the order. I texted Herb a screenshot of what we wanted instead.

Since he was already driving, he showed the screenshot to the cashier, picked up breakfast, and headed home.

Unfortunately, he accidentally brought his breakfast inside and left mine sitting in the van.

I didn’t have time to retrieve it before my first client, and Herb didn’t have the stamina to make another trip, so I started my day with coffee—but no breakfast.

It felt like the day had become one long comedy of errors.

My first client didn’t show up, so I used the extra time to take a shower.

Unfortunately, the showers were disgusting. At first, I thought someone had left a tea bag in the shower. Then I hoped it was just a wad of paper towels and not something biological.

I showered as far away from it as possible. Thankfully, I always wear shower shoes.

On my way back, I ran into Herb, who handed me my breakfast sandwich and an Amazon package containing a replacement water hose.

Our old hose had sprung a leak the day before. I hoped to swap it quickly, but the quick-connect fittings made it more complicated than expected, so I returned to work.

When I finished seeing my clients, Herb had already gone to wait for me before our movie.

I hurried to finish everything inside the trailer, but when I went outside, he wasn’t there. After the day’s many little miscommunications, I briefly—and irrationally—wondered if he’d left without me.

Instead of worrying, I replaced the leaking hose.

Our water setup is admittedly a little complicated, but it works well for us. The campground water connects to a splitter, then through a Camco filter. From there, another potable hose runs to a three-way splitter that feeds the trailer, an outside utility hose, and a connection for our propane shower in the back of the van. It looks like spaghetti, but it makes everyday camping much easier.

We’ve also spent the last several days talking about where we’ll spend the summer and next winter.

At the moment, Wyoming is looking like our summer destination.

One of the friends we’ve met on the road suggested spending the winter in Arizona. They’re planning to be there too, and it looks like we might even be able to reserve neighboring campsites.

I’ll spend some more time researching that tomorrow since it appears to be much more affordable than our original plans in El Paso.

I’m Not Feeling Well Again

Herb and I had plans to get out and explore after I finished seeing my clients.

Instead, I wasn’t feeling well again, so we stayed in and enjoyed a much lazier day together.

Rainy Day

Today was much cooler, with rain on and off throughout the day and several thunderstorms.

Tomorrow is our last full day to finish getting ready for Saturday’s move.

I got to talk with Caleb today, work went well, and I’m continuing to work on a project with ChatGPT, which has been both productive and a lot of fun.

July 24

Getting Ready to Move

Today I started work early and finished early.

I’m still not feeling great and spent much of the day resting and drinking Pepto-Bismol.

Herb was sick again last night.

I’m beginning to wonder if we picked up the parasite that’s been going around. Neither one of us has become terribly ill, but neither of us feels completely normal either.

Tomorrow is move day, and we’re both looking forward to finally settling into one place for at least a month to a month and a half.
